About The Artist

Michael J. Baker’s interest in photography started in high school in Wisconsin, when he was introduced to the art of making black and white prints in the darkroom.  He enjoyed looking for new ways to communicate ideas through photography, whether it be expressing a personal vision or bringing to life a story in the school newspaper.  The darkroom gave him a way to take an image on a negative and put the feelings and emotions “on paper”  that he felt when he took the shot. For him, the creative process began behind the camera but continued and was realized in making the prints.

Today, a camera is still the way for Michael to capture his personal vision.  However, the darkroom is now “digital” instead of “chemical.”  The medium has expanded to  color as well as black and white.    But the basic premise remains:  the creative process begins behind the camera but continues and is realized in making the prints.

While photography was Michael’s passion, his career path was marketing.  After spending 17 years as a marketing executive with The Coca Cola Company, Michael started in 1995 his own marketing consulting firm, Research Architects, which he continues to successfully run today.  Being his “own boss,” however, has allowed Michael to focus more time and effort on his passion.  And the technology of the digital age, which has allowed large prints to reflect his vision in ways not possible before, has flamed the fires of that passion and a desire to share with others who might find beauty and meaning in his art.   

In 1998, Michael moved to Utah to be closer to many of the places that inspire his images. 

Whether it be the beauty of nature or the emotions of the human experience -- capturing that feeling, sharing it with others and allowing them to experience those emotions every time they walk past it hanging on the wall, is the artistic goal and rekindled passion of M.J.Baker Images.
